How Long Does a Bar of Soap Actually Last?

A well made, fully cured handmade bar of soap typically lasts around four to six weeks with regular daily use, though this varies with bar size, how it is stored between washes, and how many people are using it. Bars left sitting in water or stored in humid, poorly drained conditions wear away considerably faster than bars kept dry between uses.

This is a question I get asked constantly by people weighing up handmade soap against a shop bought liquid pump, usually trying to work out whether the cost actually makes sense.

What actually determines how long a bar lasts

Three things matter most. The recipe itself, since bars made with harder oils and fats tend to hold their shape and wear more slowly than very soft, oil heavy bars. Storage between uses, since a bar left sitting in a puddle of water will dissolve far faster than one kept on a draining dish. And simply how many hands are using it, since a bar shared by a whole household will naturally go faster than one used by a single person.

The value question, pennies per wash

A single bar, used twice a day by one person, working out over four to six weeks, comes down to genuinely small pennies per wash once you do the maths. Cheap and inexpensive are not the same thing, and a slower wearing, better made bar is often the more economical choice over time, not the more expensive one, even though the upfront price looks higher than a supermarket multipack.

How to make a bar last longer

Store it on a draining soap dish, ideally one that lifts the bar off any standing water between uses. Let it dry out fully between washes rather than leaving it sitting in a wet shower tray. Cut a large bar in half if it feels unwieldy, since a smaller bar in active rotation and a larger one drying in reserve often outlasts one big bar left constantly wet.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bigger bar of soap last longer?

Generally yes in total use, though it will wear at a similar daily rate to a smaller bar if stored the same way. Size affects total lifespan more than daily wear rate.

Why does my soap disappear faster than expected?

Usually storage. A bar left sitting in water rather than draining properly between uses will dissolve considerably faster than one kept dry.

Is handmade soap more economical than liquid soap?

Often yes over time, particularly when you account for packaging waste and the fact liquid soap tends to be used more heavily per wash than a bar.

Every bar I sell is fully cured before it reaches my website, which is part of why it holds up properly with normal use and proper storage between washes.
